Install IPTV on an Android TV box or Google TV

There are two ways to get the app onto an Android TV box. Sometimes IBO Player is right there in the Play Store and you are done in five minutes. If it is missing, the Downloader app and code 1171959 get it on anyway. Both routes are below, and they also work on an Android phone or tablet.

Have this ready

These steps cover Android TV, Google TV, most IPTV boxes sold online, and Android phones and tablets.

  • An Android TV box, a Google TV device, a generic IPTV box, or an Android phone or tablet
  • Internet on that device; on a box, a network cable is the better choice
  • Our WhatsApp message with your server URL, username and password
  • Your phone or a computer, for the activation on iboplayer.com

Store route or Downloader route

Begin with step 1. If the Play Store has the app, steps 2 and 3 don't apply to you.

  1. Search the Google Play Store first

On the box or phone, open the Play Store and search for IBO Player. Found it? Install it and jump to step 4. Steps 2 and 3 are only for when the app is not there.

  2. No app? Install Downloader instead

Install the free Downloader app. Then open the security settings of the device and allow Downloader to install apps from unknown sources.

  3. Enter code 1171959 and install the file

Start Downloader and type 1171959 into its input box. Let the download finish and install the file. Delete the downloaded file afterwards to keep storage free.

  4. Write down the MAC address and Device Key

Open the app. Its start screen shows a MAC address and a Device Key. Copy both exactly. They belong to this box or phone only, so they will differ from the codes on your other devices.

  5. Activate on iboplayer.com and reopen the app

On your phone or computer, open iboplayer.com/device/login, type in both codes and add your IPTVnu login as an Xtream Codes playlist. Then close the app on the box completely and start it again so it loads your channels.

Code for Downloader: 1171959 You only need it when the Play Store on your device doesn't list the app.

Which kind of Android do you have?

It is the same system in three forms, and the difference shows up in the store.

Android TV and Google TV are made for the living room. Their Play Store only lists apps you can use with a remote. You get fewer apps, but the ones you install behave like proper TV apps.

Android on a phone or tablet comes with the full Play Store and touch controls. To get the picture on a TV you can cast or use an HDMI cable, but an app running on the TV itself is steadier than casting. Own a Chromecast with Google TV, the model with its own remote? Use the Chromecast with Google TV guide.

A generic IPTV box bought online is, in most cases, an Android TV box with another name on it. The steps above apply. Some of these boxes run a cut-down Android with no Play Store at all, and then Downloader is the only way in.

Use the network port

Nearly every Android TV box has one, which gives it an edge over a streaming stick.

With live TV, the picture has to arrive the moment it is broadcast. On-demand services load a stretch of video in advance and hide a short drop in your connection. A live channel has nothing in reserve, so a one-second Wi-Fi hiccup shows up on screen straight away.

As a guide, HD needs around 10 Mbit per second and 4K about 25 Mbit. Your internet plan is rarely too slow; what goes wrong is the last few metres between router and box. A network cable or a powerline adapter takes that weak spot away. Still stuttering after that? Go through fixing IPTV buffering.

Android TV box problems and fixes

What box owners ask us about most.

My box's Play Store doesn't have the app

Android TV has a different Play Store from Android phones. A box only shows apps that are approved for TV use, so a phone may find an app that the box can't. Use the Downloader route in steps 2 and 3.

The downloaded file refuses to install

First check that Downloader itself has permission to install apps; the setting works per app. If that is fine, storage is the likely culprit, because budget boxes often have just a few gigabytes. Remove an app you don't need and try again.

On the TV, the app looks like a phone app

You have the phone version instead of the TV version. It works, but the remote can't really control it. Uninstall it and install the version that the Play Store on the box offers, or plug in a mouse to control it.

After half an hour the box gets warm and sluggish

This is the most common reason cheap boxes start stuttering partway through an evening. Give the box air: not in a closed cabinet and not on top of an amplifier. Once a week, pull the plug for a full restart.

Picture works, but my amplifier or soundbar stays silent

Open the audio settings on the box, switch off surround passthrough and select stereo. Many boxes pass audio through over HDMI by default, and not every amplifier or soundbar understands every format.
