IPTV on your LG Smart TV (webOS)

On an LG Smart TV, everything starts in the LG Content Store. You install IBO Player there, take the MAC address it shows and use it to connect the TV to your IPTVnu subscription. One webOS feature causes a lot of confusion afterwards; we explain it below the steps.

Have this ready

LG Smart TVs run webOS, and this guide is written for that system.

  • An LG Smart TV with webOS that is connected to the internet
  • The TV remote; with a Magic Remote, typing codes goes faster
  • Our WhatsApp message with your server URL, username and password
  • Your phone or a computer, for the activation on iboplayer.com

Five steps on an LG TV

Leave the app open on the TV while you activate on your phone. Then you can read the codes straight off the screen.

  1. Make sure the TV is online

Check in the TV's network settings that the connection is active. If you can, use a network cable: for live TV it means far less stuttering than Wi-Fi.

  2. Install IBO Player from the LG Content Store

Open the LG Content Store on the TV, search for IBO Player and install it. Once installed, it shows up in the app bar along the bottom of the webOS home screen.

  3. Copy the MAC address and Device Key

Start the app on the TV. Its start screen shows a MAC address and a Device Key; write both down exactly. They are unique to this TV, so every other device you add gets codes of its own.

  4. Activate the TV on iboplayer.com and add your playlist

On your phone or computer, open iboplayer.com/device/login and enter the MAC address and Device Key. Log in to your IBO Player account and add your IPTVnu login as an Xtream Codes playlist.

  5. Close the app properly and start it again

Go back to the webOS home screen and really close the app there, rather than leaving it running in the background. Open it again and your channel list loads.

You won't find exact webOS menu paths here on purpose. LG moves settings around between model years and software versions, and following a path that doesn't exist on your TV wastes time. Lost? WhatsApp us the model number from the sticker on the back of the TV.

Quick start: why a restart doesn't always restart

When something on an LG TV 'still isn't fixed after switching off', this is usually behind it.

LG TVs can start faster because switching off doesn't fully power them down. The TV goes to sleep instead. That is nice when you turn it on, but it gets in the way when you troubleshoot: apps stay in memory exactly as they were.

So a changed playlist, a freshly activated device or a new channel list may not show up, however often you switch the TV off and on. It looks like the app restarted, but it was only woken up.

Turn the feature off in the TV's general settings, or pull the plug for a minute. Pulling the plug works every time, and it is the first thing we try ourselves.

LG TV problems and fixes

The five issues LG owners bring to us most.

IBO Player isn't in the LG Content Store

The Content Store differs per country and model year, and older webOS versions stop receiving new apps. LG TVs can't install apps from outside the store. The practical way out is a Fire TV Stick or Android TV box in a free HDMI port.

The app shows old data or opens where you left it

LG's quick start feature doesn't switch the TV and its apps off; it puts them to sleep. The app then wakes up in its old state, even after what looks like a restart. Switch the feature off in the TV's general settings, or pull the plug for a minute.

The app reacts slowly to the remote

Close apps running in the background from the app overview. webOS keeps them in memory, and on a TV with little memory that slows everything down. No better? Uninstall and reinstall the app, which also clears its cache.

Only the TV stutters; other devices are fine

Try a network cable to the TV first. If nothing improves, the TV can't decode the stream fast enough, which happens most with 4K on older sets. A separate media player on HDMI takes over that work.

The app broke after a TV firmware update

Uninstall the app and install it again from the Content Store. Your playlist is stored in your IBO Player account, so it is not lost. A big update can change the MAC address, though, and then you need to activate again. WhatsApp us the new MAC address if you get stuck.

Stuttering even on a cable? Then the TV isn't the problem. Go through fixing IPTV buffering, which checks the possible causes one by one.
